Who we are

What “Family First” Means to Me as an African American Health Care Provider

As an African American health care provider, “Family First” represents more than just a phrase—it’s a guiding principle rooted in culture, resilience, and community strength. In our heritage, family extends beyond bloodlines; it includes neighbors, friends, church members, and entire communities who have historically leaned on each other for survival, support, and success in the face of systemic barriers.

“Family First” means recognizing that health is not individual—it’s collective. When one person in a family struggles with illness, mental health, or access to care, it impacts everyone connected to them. As a provider, I view every patient through a holistic lens, understanding that treating a person involves addressing the well-being of their family unit—physically, emotionally, and socially.

It also speaks to empowerment. In many African American families, there’s a deep tradition of caregiving, advocacy, and teaching the next generation how to navigate a healthcare system that hasn’t always served us equitably. “Family First” fuels my commitment to break those cycles by providing culturally competent care, educating families about prevention, and ensuring they feel seen, heard, and respected.

Finally, it’s about legacy. “Family First” means building healthier futures—where families not only survive but thrive. It’s creating access, fostering trust, and promoting wellness that honors the sacrifices of those before us while paving the way for those to come.

For me, “Family First” is a call to action: to heal, to uplift, and to protect the heart of our communities—our families.
